Your Rights When You Are Caught Drunk Driving
Drunk driving or driving while under the influence of any type of narcotic substance is illegal in South Africa and contravention of this law is considered criminal. This basically means that if a traffic officer finds that you have been driving under the influence, they may arrest you and take you to jail immediately. You do however have certain rights in these cases. First remember that you have the right to contact an attorney. The relevant authorities may no incarcerate you for a period of more than 48 hours without appearing before a Magistrate. In addition to this, you have thee right to a speedy trial.
